Dr. Shanbhag, the President of Human Rights Protection Foundation (HRPF) met Sri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the then Prime Minister during his visit to Mangalore in 1999 and explained the Activities of both Basrur Consumer Forum and Human Rights Protection Foundation.
Various cases of human rights violations handled by the HRPF were explained to him. PM appreciated the objectives and principles of the Organizations. He specifically enquired about the Family of Shantharam Ganiga who died in Saudi Arabia under mysterious circumstances. He appreciated the efforts of HRPF to bring Shantharam’s dead body which was in the mortuary in a small hospital at Abha village of Saudi Arabia for 6 months. He assured that the government of India would request the Saudi Arabian Government to provide a land for constructing Hindu crematorium in their country. Later he fulfilled his promise by establishing a fully fledged crematorium in Riyadh. He also informed the Ministry of Aviation to launch a scheme to bring the dead bodies of Indians from Gulf countries to India with minimum expenses.
